FAQ

1. What is coconut oil and why is it used in pet nutrition?

Coconut oil is a plant-derived oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts. It contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) such as lauric, capric, and caprylic acids, which are a type of fat found naturally in this oil. Many pet owners include coconut oil in their pets’ diets as one component of a varied nutritional plan.

2. Is coconut oil high in saturated fat? Does that matter?

Yes, coconut oil is primarily composed of saturated fats. Not all saturated fats are the same; the medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil behave differently in the body than long-chain fats found in some animal fats. Coconut oil is used in pet food and treats because of its fat composition and stability at room temperature.

3. Does CocoTherapy coconut oil contain trans fat or hydrogenated fat?

No. CocoTherapy coconut oil is natural coconut oil that has not been hydrogenated and does not contain artificially produced trans fats.

4. What is in coconut oil?

Coconut oil is predominantly fat. It contains medium-chain triglycerides, including lauric, capric, and caprylic acids, which are natural components of the oil.

5. How is CocoTherapy coconut oil produced?

Our coconut oil is made from fresh coconut meat that is cold-pressed and processed without chemical solvents. The result is a pure coconut oil that retains the natural characteristics of the oil.

6. What does USDA Organic certification mean for CocoTherapy products?

Products with the USDA Organic seal are made with ingredients grown without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers and are processed according to USDA organic standards. CocoTherapy’s organic certification comes from a USDA-accredited certifying agent, ensuring that organic practices were followed from farming to processing.

7. What is “virgin” coconut oil?

“Virgin” refers to coconut oil obtained through mechanical or natural processes without chemical refining. This means the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat without adding or removing substances through high-temperature chemical processes.

8. How are CocoTherapy coconut chips different from shredded coconut in the grocery aisle?

CocoTherapy coconut chips are made from fresh organic coconut meat specifically prepared for animal consumption. They are processed in a way that promotes digestibility and nutritional availability. Regular shredded coconut in grocery aisles is typically dried differently and may include additives like sugar or preservatives.

9. Can coconut oil be included regularly in my pet’s diet?

Some pet owners include coconut oil in their pets’ diets as part of a broader nutrition plan. As with any dietary ingredient, it’s important to consider your pet’s overall diet and caloric balance and discuss changes with a veterinarian familiar with your pet.

10. Can pets with food sensitivities tolerate coconut products?

Coconut and coconut-derived products are not botanically related to many common allergens like peanuts or tree nuts. However, individual animals can have unique sensitivities. If your pet has known food sensitivities, consult your veterinarian before introducing new foods or treats.

11. Can coconut oil be used topically on a pet’s skin?

Some pet owners choose to apply small amounts of coconut oil externally on areas such as dry skin. The natural texture of coconut oil may help soften skin and coat. If your pet has a skin condition or irritation, please talk with your veterinarian before topical use.

12. Can I combine coconut oil with other dietary oils?

Coconut oil can be one of several dietary fat sources included in a pet’s feeding plan. Some owners alternate or combine fats like coconut oil with other oils to diversify fat sources. As always, consult your veterinarian to determine what fits your pet’s nutritional needs.

13. Are CocoTherapy products manufactured in facilities that handle common allergens?

CocoTherapy products are produced without the use of dairy, eggs, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, or wheat in the same processing facilities.

14. How are the coconuts harvested for CocoTherapy products?

Our coconuts are ethically sourced, and we do not use animals such as monkeys in the harvesting process. The coconuts are harvested by trained human workers.
